TIDBITS: HOUSEHOLD HINTS & INFO
MAKE YOUR OWN HOUSEHOLD PRODUCTS:

UNSCENTED BATH POWDER: Combine 1/2 cup baking soda with 1/2 cup
cornstarch in a container with a shaker top. Keeps a long time.

DRAIN OPENER: Pack clogged drain with 1/2 cup baking soda, then pour
in 1 cup vinegar. Cover the drain & let set for 10 minutes. Flush with
about 1 gallon boiling water.

WINDSHIELD DE-ICER: Combine 1 part antifreeze with 4 1/2 parts alcohol
& 4 1/2 parts water & pour into your windshield washer fluid reservoir.
Keep away from children & pets.
TO QUIET A COUGH:

Mix 1 tablespoon lemon juice with 1 teaspoon honey & a pinch of cayenne
pepper, optional. The lemon juice reduces inflammation & adds Vitamin C, the
honey coats & soothes and the cayenne increases circulation & hastens healing.
MAKE YOUR OWN CHEESE CRACKERS   
MAKES ABOUT 6 DOZEN CRACKERS

1/2 cup butter, room temp.
8 ounces sharp cheddar cheese, room temp.
1 cup flour
1/2 teaspoon dry mustard
1/2 teaspoon paprika
1/4 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
Dash salt

PIZZA DOGS                      SERVES 4-8

8 ounces pizza sauce
16 slices pepperoni, chopped
1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
8 hot dog buns
8 cooked hot dogs

In a saucepan, combine the first 2 ingredients & heat until warm
over medium-low heat. Place a hot dog on a bun & top with some
pizza sauce mixture. Sprinkle with cheese. May broil a minute or
two to melt cheese.
OVEN FRIES           SERVES 6

6 medium baking potatoes
1/3 cup butter
1/4 teaspoon pepper
Parmesan cheese, optional
Heat oven to 425 degrees.
Do not peel spuds. Cut spuds in half length-
wise & cut each half into 4 wedges. Melt
butter in oven on rimmed baking sheet.
Remove pan from oven & brush wedges with
butter, covering all sides. Sprinkle with
pepper & Parmesan. (May use about 1 1/2
teaspoons salt instead of Parmesan.) Place
spuds, skin side down, in pan. Bake 40
minutes or until tender & browned, turning
over halfway through baking.
ICE CREAM SODA     MAKES 1

2 tablespoons chocolate syrup
Seltzer water
1 scoop vanilla ice cream
Whipped cream
1 maraschino cherry
Pour chocolate syrup into a large
glass. Add seltzer water, stirring as
you pour, to within 2" from top of
glass. Carefully add ice cream. Top
with a dollop of whipped cream & a
cherry.

HOUSEHOLD HINTS:

--Spray your snow shovel with nonstick cooking spray to help snow
slide off easily.
--Toss dried citrus into your fireplace or wood burner to give the
room a spicy aroma.
--Keep plastic wrap in the refrigerator to keep it from sticking to
itself.
--Clean the leaves of your house plants with a cotton ball dipped
in milk or olive oil. (Makes it shiny & is good for the health of
the plant.)
FEATURED SUBSTITUTE:

No crumb crust?
Grind about 14 squares graham crackers or
about 22 cookie wafers (any variety) in blender or food processor
until fairly fine crumbs. Combine with 2-3 tablespoons sugar, if
needed, and about 3 tablespoons butter. Press into bottom & up
sides of pie pan.  
FOR YOUR HEALTH:

STEAM TREATMENT FOR CONGESTION
Put 3 tablespoons finely chopped fresh
thyme, sage, or peppermint in a
medium bowl & pour boiling water into
it. Lean over the bowl with a towel
draped over your head & breath in the
steam for 10 minutes.

FOR TOOTHACHE RELIEF
Put 1 1/2 teaspoons whole cloves in a
small pot. Pour in 1 cup boiling water
& let steep for 10 minutes. Strain
into a glass. Rinse mouth with the
mixture to relieve a toothache.
Beat butter in a large bowl until light & fluffy. Blend in cheese
well. On floured surface, form dough into 3-4"-long logs about
1 1/4" diameter. Wrap rolls in waxed paper & refrigerate
several hours or overnight.
To bake: Heat oven to 475 degrees.
Cut rolls into 1/8" thick slices. Place slices on ungreased
cookie sheet & bake 7-8 minutes, or until lightly golden.
